IYCAF Projects

Unbroken Circle
Rhonda Richmond, the creator of this workshop, uses spirituals, the blues, and original compositions to bridge the gap between African American Church music and Yoruba folklore/philosophy embedded in both secular and spiritual songs. Richmond conducts a five-week summer seminar to prepare children ages 5-15 for a performance of the repetoire. Contact circle@iycaf.org for more info.

Stories Untold
An extention of Unbroken Circle, Stories Untold consists of twelve two-hour afterschool workshops conducted by Cassandra Wilson and Rhonda Richmond over the course of four weeks. The workshop is designed to encourage creativity and includes an overview of Yoruba mythology, collective songwriting, introduction to Orisha songs, and a performance at the conclusion. Contact stories@iycaf.org for more info.

Iyami Project
Iyami Project offers young people ages 8 to 18 years a series of workshops, performances and recording experiences. We will explore the traditional music from the African Diaspora relating to the journey of Yoruba people and their Icons of the land, air, oceans and rivers. Through the stories and songs relating to these Icons, we will explore the need to take care of the natural world and what role we as human beings have in that story. These ideas will be developed through the creation of original material and songs. Contact iyami@iycaf.org for more info.
